December 1st 2024- Top NGOs, celebrities and journalists were awarded during the inaugural NGOs Awards that celebrated the exceptional contributions of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and people driving societal progress across diverse sectors. 

During a grand event held at Emara Ole Sereni at the weekend, outstanding organizations and individuals were recognized for their impact and innovation in advancing development across Kenya.

Amref Health Africa CEO Dr Githinji Gitahi was feted as the CEO of the Year while CIHEB was recognized as the overall NGO of the Year. Celebrity Eric Omondi was also voted as the Celebrity Champion of the Year for his charitable causes while the Standard’s Suleiman Yeri was recognized for his coverage of the sector. “This award is dedicated to staff, our partners, health providers and health workers in all counties,” said CIHEB CEO Emily Koech. 

“It is an honour to be here. Without the third sector, the public and the private sectors cannot meet all needs of the people. The awards are also important because they also recognise all grassroots organisations doing great work,” said Dr Gitahi.

Eric Omondi thanked all Kenyans who have contributed to his causes. 

The Chief Guest at the event Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary  Raymond Omollo underscored the critical role of NGOs in shaping Kenya’s socio-economic landscape. Dr. Omollo, whose speech was read by National Administration Secretary Beverly Opwora, reaffirmed the government’s readiness to collaborate with NGOs to support the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).

“NGOs play a pivotal role in addressing grassroots challenges. The government is committed to fostering partnerships with organizations that align with BETA to ensure sustainable development for all,” said Dr. Omollo.

PBORA Director General, Lindon Nicholas, emphasized the importance of the awards in recognizing excellence.

“These awards celebrate the achievements of NGOs and highlight their critical contributions to Kenya’s growth,” he stated.

PBORA Chairman Mwambu Mabongah lauded the initiative as a “significant step in elevating the sector and motivating continued excellence.”
